Am I speaking to you?

Rabbi Gavriel Leventhal, Mashgiach of Yeshivas Bircas HaTorah - Am I speaking to you?

If you're reading this article, you're probably thinking about whichever you're going to attend next year, and I'd like to challenge you now.

I'm told that you're not the right person that I should be speaking to. I'm told that really, your Rebbeim and your parents are the ones who are making this decision. And I'm told that ultimately, you're not responsible for the decision of where you go yeshiva.

However, I'm inclined to trust in your capacity, and more than that, in your desire to make an informed, intelligent, and ultimately good decision. Before I continue, I'm going to ask you don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying that because Bircas HaTorah is the right yeshiva for everyone who's reading this article right now, because it isn't.  Nor am I saying that you should disregard the advice that your parents or Rebbeim give you, because you shouldn't.

But for those of you that Bircas HaTorah is built for; if you're that kind of talmid, then listen up, because I'm offering you an opportunity.

If you're interested in leaving home and playing around for a year, you can stop reading now, because I'm not speaking to you.

And if you want to go to yeshiva program that just emphasizes learning, nothing more, you can stop reading as well, because I'm not speaking to you either.

And even if you want to come to Eretz Yisrael to learn, but you're not interested in growing as a person, you can also stop reading now; I'm definitely not speaking to you.

Right now, I'm talking to those of you that understand that learning well is about more than just translating, reading Rishonim and Achronim, and putting together the reid. It's about being trained by a Rebbe.

We're not talking about learning Rishonim. Anyone can do that. We're talking about learning like a Rishon, and that takes training. That takes a shiur that's geared towards educating and teaching you how to build the sugya yourself. Not simply to show up to a shiur and watch a magid shiur put it together, and then try and emulate them and copy them.

Of course, along the way we're going to have a lot of fun. Scuba diving in Eilat, rappelling down mountain cliffs, water hikes through rivers. Water parks, off-roading, kayaking.  A lot of experiences that'll blow you away. And of course, we've got great guys in the Yeshiva with whom you'll have the opportunity to build life-long relationships. And of course, we have fantastic Rebbeim that you'll connect to.

But more than that. When you learn how to learn, deeply - you'll love learning, you'll connect to your learning, and your learning will be personal. Now if that's what you want, then I'm speaking to you.
