The Yeshiva Blog
What kind of people learn in Bircas HaTorah?
Most yeshivas cater to a particular type of student, coming from a particular type of background (e.g. ffb, bt, charedi, dati leumi, modern orthodox) and / or from a particular geographic location (e.g. America, the UK, South Africa, Israel) and / or of a particular age. So if you were to pick a yeshiva, and look at the student profile, you’d probably find that the student population is pretty uniform.
Many people like to be surrounded by people like themselves, learning in yeshiva with their same friends from high school, from the same community.
But that is not reflective of the world at large, where life is learning to live with and get along with people not like you. A Brit can live with, learn with and get along with an American. An American-Israeli can learn in the same yeshiva as a South African. An 18-19 year old post high school student can learn in the same shiur and Beis Hamedrash as a second or third year student, a 35 year old professional or a 72 year old retiree.
What’s important to you? Who would you like to be in yeshiva with? A uniform crowd of people the same age as you, from the same place, the same community, the same school? But life is not about constantly being surrounded by people just like you.
That doesn’t mean that there isn’t a common denominator connecting the people who are in Bircas. Maybe you’d like to be part of a yeshiva that is growing, where everybody is growing, and what is significant is not where you are coming from, but where you are going?
Bircas HaTorah offers students, young and old alike, the opportunity to engage with students of all ages; post-high school talmidim, avreichim, semicha students and professionals together. Furthermore, the yeshiva is not a revolving door. Chanoch lanaar al pi darcho. Find each one their channel for growth. The yeshiva is a community where everyone is helping each other to grow; every person is working on improving their avodas Hashem, and the yeshiva only really cares about one thing – are you trying?
